What Is Spain's Digital Nomad Visa?
Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (officially the International Teleworking Visa) allows non-EU remote workers to live and work legally in Spain. Launched in 2023, it has become one of Europe's most popular visa programs for American remote workers.
The visa lets you work remotely for your existing employer or clients while living in Spain — enjoying the country's lower cost of living, excellent healthcare, and quality of life.
Who Qualifies?
The Digital Nomad Visa is designed for remote workers who earn their income from outside Spain. Key requirements include:
- Remote work for companies or clients outside Spain
- Clean criminal record (FBI background check for Americans)
- Valid health insurance that meets Spanish standards
- Proof of income demonstrating financial stability
If your situation does not fit a textbook profile, that does not necessarily mean you cannot qualify. Many cases that seem complex can be navigated successfully with the right guidance.
Two Application Paths
Consulate Application (From the U.S.)
Apply at the Spanish consulate in your jurisdiction. Processing takes 45–90 days and grants a 1-year visa.
UGE-CE Application (From Within Spain)
If you are already in Spain on a visa-exempt entry, you can apply directly. Processing takes 20–30 days and grants a 3-year authorization.
The Beckham Law Advantage
One of the biggest draws for Americans is Spain's Beckham Law — a special tax regime that offers a flat 24% tax rate on Spanish-sourced income and exempts your foreign income from Spanish taxation for 6 years.
For a remote worker earning $120,000/year, this can mean savings of €10,000–€20,000 per year compared to standard Spanish tax rates.
Healthcare in Spain
American remote workers are often surprised by how affordable and high-quality healthcare in Spain is compared to the U.S. Once you become a resident, you gain access to options that are a fraction of what you would pay in the United States.
